How to find underpriced cars in Houston
Updated November 4, 2026, from CarHag's own listing data
About 1 in 25 used cars listed around Houston is priced well under market. In the last 30 days CarHag counted 18,421 cars between $1,500 and $25,000 on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and OfferUp, and 724 of them (3.9%) cleared its deal bar.
Cheaper cars hide more deals
The lower the price, the better your odds. Over half of all deals were under $5,000.
| Asking price | Cars listed | Deals | Deal rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $5,000 | 6,918 | 391 | 5.7% |
| $5,000 to $9,999 | 5,635 | 221 | 3.9% |
| $10,000 to $14,999 | 3,321 | 78 | 2.3% |
| $15,000 to $19,999 | 1,519 | 25 | 1.6% |
| $20,000 to $25,000 | 1,028 | 9 | 0.9% |
Half the "private" market is pros
Only 50% of these listings looked like true private sellers (9,203 of 18,421). The rest were dealers, flippers or likely dealers. It matters for price: private sellers asked a median 5.5% under market, and everyone else asked a median 7.3% over it. Filter out the pros first and you're fishing in the right half.
What's listed most
The most-listed models were the Ford F-150 (546), Toyota Camry (409), Toyota Corolla (402), Nissan Altima (401) and Honda Civic (398). Lots of listings give you plenty of comparable cars, so it's easier to spot one priced wrong.
When to look
Facebook posts picked up through the day and peaked from 3pm to 5pm. Monday and Tuesday were the busiest days and Sunday the slowest. Check in the afternoon, and check again in the evening.
How to find them
- Know the local price. Compare a car with the same model nearby, using year and miles, and don't lean on a national book value alone.
- Skip the pros. Many phone numbers, repeated photos and "down payment" wording usually mean a dealer.
- Move fast. Message with a real offer and a pickup time, because "is this available?" gets ignored.
- Verify before you pay. Check the title, run the VIN, and look for flood signs, which matter in Houston.
How we counted
This covers October 5 to November 4, 2026, within 50 miles of the scan center, which moved from New Caney to downtown Houston on October 30. "Deal" means a car that cleared CarHag's bar, roughly 15% or more under its market estimate with $1,500 or more in estimated profit. Estimates can be wrong, and a share of flagged deals turn out to have problems. Facebook data stops at $15,000 and is collected less often overnight, so higher price bands and night hours are undercounted.
